The history of Belgium extends before the founding of the modern state of that name in 1830, and is intertwined with those of its neighbors: the Netherlands, Germany, France and Luxembourg. For most of its history, what is now Belgium was either a part of a larger territory, such as the Carolingian Empire, or divided into a number of smaller states, prominent among them being the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Flanders, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and the County of Luxembourg. Due to its strategic location and its history as a country of contact between different cultures, Belgium has been called the "crossroads of Europe"; for the many armies fighting on its soil, it has also been called the "battlefield of Europe" or the "cockpit of Europe". It is also remarkable as a European nation ...

Belgium's history of linguistic division is as old as the country itself, the northern half being Dutch or Flemish speaking while the southern half is French or Walloon speaking. And we haven't even got into the German speakers living on Belgium's eastern fringes! The two larger language groups each attempt to rule their own independently having essentially segregated governments for Flanders and Wallonia, however the crisis of 2007 - 2011 showed that while the northern Flemings wanted more decentralisation and autonomy, the southern Walloons were dead set against it. Since then a split of Belgium along these lines has seemed inevitable, but this led me to question: how on earth did Belgium become so divided? The story will take us back to the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, W...

Belgium and the Netherlands are two of the three countries in Western Europe that make up the Low Countries. In many ways the two are very similar, and historically at different periods in history large parts of both were ruled by the same political entities including the Roman Empire, the Frankish Empire, the Burgundian Netherlands, the Habsburg Netherlands, The Spanish Empire, and finally the Kingdom of the United Netherlands. But today the two are independent of one another despite the many cultural similarities and shared history. In this three part series I will be looking at how Belgium became independent from the Netherlands starting with this episode on the historical context of the two countries. I'm not alone today as this video is brought to you in collaboration with Mr Beat, ...
Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen in the Belgium province of Limburg, has foundations that date back to Roman times. The Romans knew already that the conditions for winemaking were really good in this Haspengouw area because the property used to have 25 hectares of vineyards back then. In 1990 winery Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen started the renaissance of winemaking in Belgium by planting the first vines again. What began merely as a hobby turned into the largest wine estate in Belgium that produces top Belgian wines. ► PLEASE SUPPORT US ON PATREON! Wijndomein Aldeneyck owners Karel Henckens and his wife Tine used to have a fruit company but decided that life could perhaps be more beautiful when, instead of just growing apples and pears, they grew grapes and made Belgian wine. The vineyards of Wijndomein Aldeneyck now stretch along the south-eastern banks of the river Maas. The pebble and rocky gravel soil, rich in minerals, is perfect for growing grapes. ► PLEASE SUPPORT US ON PATREON! #kechhotline Record-breaking temperatures across the continent mean traditional wine making regions are worried about this year’s harvest. But rising temperatures haven’t been damaging to all of Europe’s wine makers with a record-breaking year predicted for the new kid on the block - Belgium. However, even by breaking their own two million bottle record, Belgian producers still have some catching up to do, trailing far behind the 600 million bottles produced in Bordeaux region alone. We arrived really late at night
And we found a place to sleep under a small patch of trees
We didn't set up our tent that night
We just put sleeping bags right down in the weeds
The ground was covered in thorns
But the ground was dry and the ground was warm
And we could see the stars at night
So we knew we'd be alright
I heard some footsteps approaching the fence
So I picked my head up to get a look at it
It was the most monstrous cow I'd ever seen
With eyes like a devil burnin' straight into me
And I knew that if it could
It would hop over that fence and crush us with its hoofs
And I knew that we were in deep
Eighty days left, I'm glad that you are here with me
We woke up the next morning to discover
Our true enemy was beneath us the whole time
There were slugs all over our sleeping bags
And everywhere they went they left a trail of slime
And we packed up our things, we walked into town
Into a town I'd never heard of before
We ate fries in a Medieval market,
A thousand sauces
I chose ketchup of course
Of course, of course, of course, of course
Hung around for a few days then headed out
On our way we got dropped off without wanting to be
In the city where most of the world's diamonds are made
But the city had treasure and sparkly things
Didn't hold many splendors for you and me,
