Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, who had been suffering heart problems, died on Saturday.
His body lies in state in the presidential palace until Tuesday.
In Damascus, people took to the streets to show their respect for the man and sorrow over his loss.
Some Syrians were prostrated by their emotion.
Others marched, carrying flags and photos of their old leader - still others blew trumpets and beat drums.
Syria's red-black-and-white flags were flying at half-mast.
Shopkeepers hung black-bordered portraits of Hafez al-Assad on shuttered store fronts.
Verses from the Islamic holy book, the Koran, were being played at low volume through loudspeakers in government offices and hotels.
Secondary school exams, scheduled this weekend, were postponed until next week.
Funeral plans for the President were not immediately announced, but he was expected to be buried in his home village of Qardaha, 350 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Damascus.
Syria now waits for word on who will succeed President Hafez al-Assad.
He died before he could consolidate the position of his son and heir apparent.

Syria’s decade of conflict: The many colours of Raqqa
The Documentary Podcast
Abood Hamam often risked death to send pictures of Syria's war around the world. But no-one knew his name. Now he’s broken cover to celebrate the many colours of his native Raqqa.
Syrian born reporter Lina Sinjab presents a special series from Assignment’s award winning archive on the ten years of civil war in her country.
In the final programme from the season Lina hears from BBC foreign correspondent Tim Whewell who spoke to Abood Hamam, perhaps the only photojournalist to have worked under every major force in Syria's war - and lived to tell the tale. At the start of the uprising he was head of photography for the state news agency, SANA, taking official shots of President Assad and his wife Asma by day - and secretly filming opposition attacks by night. Later he defected and returned to his home town, Raqqa, where various rebel groups were competing for control. Other journalists fled when the terrorists of so-called Islamic State (IS) took over, but Abood stayed - and was asked by IS to film its victory parade. He sent pictures of life under IS to agencies all over the world - using a pseudonym. As the bombing campaign by the anti-IS coalition intensified, Abood moved away - but returned later to record the heartbreaking destruction - but also the slow return of life, and colour, to the streets. For months, he roamed through the ruins with his camera, seeing himself as ”the guardian of the city." Raqqa's future is still very uncertain, but Abood now wants everyone to see his pictures, which he posts on Facebook, and know his real name. He hopes the colours he's showing will tempt the thousands of families who've fled Raqqa to return home, and rebuild their lives, and their city.

Just something in your eyes
Don't be afraid
The shadows know me
Let's leave the world behind
Take me through the night
Fall into the dark side
We don't need the light
We'll live on the dark side
I see it, let's feel it
While we're still young and fearless
Let go of the light
Fall into the dark side
Fall into the dark side
Give into the dark side
Let go of the light
Fall into the dark side
Beneath the sky
As black as diamonds
We're running out of time
Don't wait for truth
To come and blind us
Let's just believe their lies
Believe it, I see it
I know that you can feel it
No secrets worth keeping
So fool me like I'm dreaming
Take me through the night

I ask myself, why should I focus on the negatives when there's so many positive things to say about Yemen?
Look, there's no doubting that Yemen is undergoing some major problems like civil war, intense famine and excruciating poverty. But when I take a second to look past that, this is truly an amazing country from the food to the historical sites and hospitality. Yemen is capturing my heart like few countries ever have.
Please enjoy this video which shows off the good side of Yemen from my experiences in the country so far. I really wish the media would have more stories like this in Yemen (and other countries like

This story is about Nuclear test at Pokharan in the year 1998. It was the year when India and Pakistan were on the verge of a war. The bitterness between both the nations was at its peak. But declaring a war wasn't all that easy especially for Pakistan. So they planned to attack India by hiring a few militants. When Indian officials got this information they realized that there is only one man who can do the job for them and that is Mr. Jawahar. At the time of partition Jawahar had left all his relations, settled in Delhi with his father and started his business. Since his roots were from Pakistan his contacts were still alive and he knew all the influential people there. That was exactly why he and his services were used during the 1965 war with Pakistan. Although dedicated to the benefit of his country, Jawahar's son Jatin, serving in Indian Army was declared traitor by the BSF in 1978. unable to bear such humiliation, Jatin commits suicide. Due to this shock, Jatin's wife loses her voice forever. One death shocks the whole family and changes everything overnight. Jawahar runs around to prove that his son was a patriot and not a traitor but since Jawahar is a secret agent he is neither heard nor was he ever awarded any medal for his credible work in the past. Eventually he is even thrown out of job and was forced to the leave the lanes of old Delhi where he lived to move house to Tagore gardens. Secret agent Jawahar now had only his granddaughter Sameera to live for.Inspite of such a treatment from his country, Jawahar once again agrees to work as a secret agent. His only condition is that his son will be cleared of the black spot on his career. Since Jawahar is too old now, his grand daughter Sameera is put on the job of secret agent. Sameera goes to Pakistan to get those important documents that hold the information about militants and their plans to enter the Indian border. Will Sameera manage to get the documents? Will she be able to clear the name of her father as traitor? Will she make her grandfather Jawahar proud in front of the whole nation?
