In northern Syria, the conflict rumbles on with seemingly no end in sight. The Islamic State (IS) group still controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria. What's more, the groups fighting against them also seem to be divided. Our team went to meet members of the main Sunni Arab force opposing the IS group: the "Sanadid", an armed formation of the Shammar tribe.

Islam's Rising Star - Syria
September 2006
War in Lebanon has dramatically altered the political spectrum in Syria. Support for Hezbollah is strong, and many now call for the re-capture of the Golan Heights.
In a nationally televised address to the Syrian Journalist Union, President Bashar al Assad issued a stark warning to Israel; "Your weapons, warplanes, rockets and even your atomic bombs will not protect you". He is playing a dangerous game. Syria's secularism is under attack. Posters of Nasrallah are selling on the streets like hotcakes; "we keep running out of them". And 90% of women wear the veil. As economist Ayman Abdel Nour points out, "the biggest danger for Assad's regime is radical Islam", so why does he allow and encourage it now? Is Bashar Assad pursuing this policy to increase his political streng...

Syria's war: five years of horror
Warning: distressing scenes
This fifth anniversary of Syria's war without end is a bleak moment indeed. Perhaps we have become inured to the scale of the suffering in what is the heart of the Middle East. The children who already know nothing else, the displaced, the dead and the dying.

Syria's Christians provide Ramadan meals for Muslim neighbours
Syrian Christians prepare Ramadan meals for Muslims who are fasting. As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close the backyard of Ummayad Mosque in Damascus has turned into a pop-up kitchen. The free meals are provided by a Christian charity. Dozens of volunteers make up the food production line to support their Muslim neighbours. The night culminates with traditional singing and dancing as volunteers set off to deliver the food. Ramadan ends with the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr.

Jordan: Angelina Jolie in conversation with Syrian refugees
UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie speaks with two Syrian women who have suffered the ravages of the war in their country.
Ms. Jolie told reporters that "the Syrian crisis here in Jordan and across the region is the most acute humanitarian crisis anywhere in the world today." Refugees from the Syrian conflict, she said, "have left behind a country in which millions of people are displaced... and where at least 93,000 have been killed: the friends, neighbours, fathers, mothers and children of people in this camp today."

Is Bashar Assad pursuing this policy to increase his political strength and refocus the nation back to; "our one cause -- the Golan Heights"? Yet, as Nour admits; "Syria cannot open a direct war with Israel. We cannot win". Instead Assad hopes to force the US into talks, offering himself as the only moderate voice, whilst at the same time "supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas, and jihad in Israel." If Assad plays his cards wrong, the worry is that sunni Sheik Mohammad Hasbah's prediction of "more violence and bloodshed in the Middle East" could come true.

On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them.
In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border.
As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State.
