How the Yakuza Made Tattoo Culture Illegal in Japan | Under the Ink
Tebori describes the hand-carven technique of Japanese tattooing. It's a traditional method that dates back to the 17th century, but was once completely banned after being closely associated with the yakuza, Japan's organized crime syndicates.
Tattooing overall in Japan is taboo. The government itself deems that one must be a licensed health professional to tattoo, but the government isn't issuing licenses to tattoo, leaving the profession in a legal grey zone.
In the first episode of Under the Ink, we follow Horimasa Tosui, who tattoos in secret in order to practice his work.

A look at Japanese food culture after traditional cuisine added to priceless heritage list
Washoku, the traditional cuisine of Japan, was given world cultural heritage status by the United Nations on Wednesday.
French cooking is the only other cuisine that had been distinguished as a national culinary tradition.

🇨🇱🇯🇵Japanese Culture in Santiago, Chile
Check out the new Book Trailer for BLUE PEARL, BLACK BUTTERFLY

With their roots put down during a boom in the mining industry in the early 20th century, many nowadays have exceeded their grandparents' expectations and have become doctors, lawyers, graphic designers, business owners and teachers. Despite considering themselves as proud Chileans, they revel in their cultural uniqueness, even more since both Pacific Rim countries have enjoyed great relations for 120 years.
To mark this milestone event, a celebration was put on full of Taiko drums, Sakura dance, folk art, cherry blossoms, and rituals. This documentary shows rehearsals for the 120th anniversary event of Japan-Chile relations as well as the actual event put on 24 March 20...

Nippon-Ga painter Taro Yamamoto developed the Nippon-Ga style of painting here different cultures, both traditional and modern, coexist.
Fusing together classical painting and contemporary techniques, his work incorporate elements of humor and parody.
Taro Yamamoto became inspired by the close proximity of Kyoto's temples and shrines to fast food establishments while a student of classical Japanese painting at Kyoto University of Art and Design in 1999. He went on to develop his own style of painting, coined Nippon-Ga, in which the different cultures in Japan, both traditional and modern, coexist, creating works of art that fused together the customs of classical and modern painting. With works of art putting a modern spin on classical painting and his style described as contemporary Rimpa, he is an artist gaining much attention. In commemoration of the 400 th anniversary of the Rimpa School
of Japanese Painting in 2015, he created a folding screen featuring Mario and Luigi from Super Mario Brothers as a modern conceptualization of Fujin-Raijin, the Japanese gods of wind and thunder. He is currently an Associate Professor at Akita University of Art and has won numerous awards including the Kyoto Prefecture Culture Prize Award.

Washoku, the traditional cuisine of Japan, was given world cultural heritage status by the United Nations on Wednesday.
French cooking is the only other cuisine that had been distinguished as a national culinary tradition.
The Japanese "washoku" embraces seasonal ingredients, a unique taste, time consuming preparation and a style of eating steeped in centuries of tradition.
Japanese food focuses on the aesthetics of the meal, including fancy ceramic and lacquer-ware, and food textures and shapes, often placed in a decorative fashion, sometimes with inedible items, such as an autumn leaf, for effect.
At its heart is the savoury, "umami", based on the flavour from dried bonito flakes and seaweed, Japan's equivalent of soup stock.
It is recognised as a fundamental taste in Japanese cuisine.
Recipes celebrate the four seasons, by focusing on fresh ingredients specific to the time of the year.
Washoku is practised at the traditional Japanese restaurant, Genyadana Hamadaya, which was founded in 1912.
The restaurant's chief chef, Yoshihiro Ito, explained: "Be it the ingredients, or the serving of the dish, it needs to be something that can be eaten only at that specific time, using that specific serving dish."
It's not only the food and ingredients that play a part in the washoku culture, but also the environment and the ambience in which the food is eaten.
"The Japanese tradition, of having a relaxing environment to appreciate Japanese food using all five senses, is something I believe is unique to Japan," said Keiko Mita, owner of Genyadana Hamadaya.
Even as the popularity of sushi and sake booms worldwide, some say they are candidates for the endangered list within Japan itself.
Annual rice consumption in Japan fell 17 percent over the last 15 years, according to government data.
Fast-food chains have become ubiquitous in Japan, including Krispy Kreme, Domino's Pizza and McDonald's.
Their reasonable prices and fast service attract the stomachs of the workaholic "salarymen" and OL, short for "office ladies".
Takashi Amo, Director of the Policy Planning Division at Japan's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said the changing lifestyles, family structure and people's preferences mean they have less time to cook a traditional meal, or savour traditional cuisine.
"There is concern, a rising fear, that if things go on unchanged, the "washoku" culture might die out," said Amo.
But the establishment of the cuisine within UN-recognised world heritage may just give washoku the boost it needs.

A small Japanese community thrives in Santiago, Chile.
This documentary shows rehearsals for the 120th anniversary event of Japan-Chile relations as well as the actual event put on 24 March 2017.

This is a sequel to my other video on the food environment in Japan titled "Why is it so easy to be thin in Japan?"
Having lived in America and now living in Japan, it's interesting to see how very different these two food environments are. I've seen comments on another one of my videos about low carb saying something like "Oh sure, you can lose weight on low carb, which is why all the rice eating Japanese people are so thin, right?"
So with this video (and maybe the last one), I'm hoping to show that the diet over here is more complex th...

Why are Japanese People So Thin & Healthy? Exploring a Tokyo Supermarket
Japan is such a unique country and one of great contrast and beauty. It has the mysterious ability to make you feel as though you are simultaneously years ahead in the future and hundreds of years in the past. It’s wonderfully surreal in that respect and yet, regardless of time, Japan has always been ahead of us when it comes to diet and lifestyle and general well being. The foods they ate 500 years ago that kept them youthful and healthy are the same foods that we see modern day businessmen and families enjoying every single day and appreciating their amazing health benefits.
It’s something that they take very seriously and I think that is what attracts me to this country, and why, as a wellness explorer I have so much respect for the way they live. I’ve learned so much from observing th...

The Japanese Health System: How Japan Achieved Living the Longest and Healthiest
Dr. Yasushi Sakuramoto, Maxwell School EMPA candidate
Japan has realized the world’s highest level of life expectancy and healthcare standards through the universal health insurance system. This system includes covering all citizens through public health insurance, freedom of choice of medical institution, and high-quality medical services with low costs. While the social insurance system is the basis, public subsidies are the resources used to maintain universal health insurance. With the aging population of Japan, however, challenges such as financial sustainability, geographical inequity, and skewed distribution of physician specialties are being presented. Japan’s experience can provide perspective to other countries’ health policy creation.

WHAT IS THE JAPANESE DIET !?
this video is sponsored by Skillshare ! get 3 months of Skillshare for just $0.99 at http://skl.sh/jenny99 (only available until valentine's day)
in today's video i'm talking about something i call the japanese diet, inspired by a book from 1889 called "a japanese boy" by shukichi shigemi ( that i read years ago ). when describing the japanese culture to americans, shigemi writes about how parents are encouraging their kids to eat a healthy diet. basically kids got told to eat 30 different things per day, and 100 things per week. sounds like a lot, right ? and that's where the idea of the japanese diet comes in. i was so intrigued by this old school variety concept that i decided to put myself to the test. check it out !

The Japanese are well known for their slim physiques, living the longest, and being the healthiest group of people on the planet.
Not only do they have one of the longest life expectancies in the world, they have the lowest incidences of mortality related to cardiovascular conditions.
This is because the Japanese not only eat smartly, but they lead active lifestyles that promote macro management and a diverse food palette.
If you want to be healthy like a Japanese individual, here are five methods you can use.
1. Stop Consuming Liquids During Your Meals.
According to Japanese culture, drinking water or other liquids during your meals is bad for your digestion because it cools down the body.
Instead, you want the food to create warmth in your body as this ensures that the food gets ...

So with this video (and maybe the last one), I'm hoping to show that the diet over here is more complex than just "high carb"

SUMMARY:
- The secret to Japan’s success begins with their diet, which is pretty carb-heavy and low in saturated fats. Their main dishes of choice include vegetables, grains, fish, and meat.
- Just like the rest of the world, a lot of Japanese people have a hectic schedule that doesn’t leave a lot of time or opportunity to prepare a home-cooked meal. In that case, they can turn to their version of fast food, which is usually a lot healthier and resembles home-style cooking.
- Most Japanese people have very regulated meal times. They eat 3 filling meals a day, with breakfast usually happening between 8 and 9am, lunch from 12 to 1pm, and dinner between 6 and 8pm.
- It’s a lot more common for Japanese children to walk or cycle to school. Of course, other countries have a lot of reasons why it might not be efficient or safe for kids to hoof it to class.
- Portion sizes have been on a steep rise in the last 20 years throughout the world. For example, countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, the U.S., and the U.K. have much larger fast food portions than Japan.
- Separate bicycle lanes and plenty of safe areas for pedestrians are common sites in Japan. This allows the Japanese to naturally burn calories as they commute to and from work or school every day.
- Tea, especially the green variety, is the number one beverage in Japan. Green tea has been praised for having a ton of major health benefits, like increasing metabolism, burning fat, fighting anxiety, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, to name a few.
- The practice of using chopsticks also helps in weight management, since they make you eat more slowly and in smaller bites. This slow process of eating helps people catch when they’re feeling full and avoid eating too much. The fact that food is served on a bunch of plates also slows down the process.
- The number one way that the Japanese stay thin has to do with removing distractions and being mindful about the process of food consumption. Eating in Japan is treated with respect.

The Japanese Healthcare system is considered Universal since it’s suppose to covers everyone in Japan. So anyone living in Japan including myself even as a foreigner have to pay into the system. Yes, there are exceptions to this and the Healthcare System in Japan is not perfect, don’t think it is, but I wanted to highlight the general experience for most Japanese people as well as my experience as a foreigner living in Japan on the Japan Healthcare system.
So, Japanese Insurance covers 70-90% of all necessary doctor visits. And one of the things I appreciate about the Japanese healthcare system is that you don’t need to pay the full amount of the medical bill up front and then later fill out paperwork to a claim a refund from your healthcare provider. Perfect for someone like me who absolutely hates paperwork.
All you need to do is show your healthcare card at the hospital or clinic when you arrive. They will automatically calculate the amount you need to pay and you are good to go! And to be honest, it’s surprisingly cheap...which I’ll get into the actual costs soon. Again, people generally pay about 30% of the total hospital bill, but it can be reduced down to 10% for other reasons.
So, Your monthly Healthcare insurance fee varies depending on your age, income, type of work and area you live. And there are 3 main types of healthcare systems in Japan 1. For Company employees, 2. For civil servants, teacher and public works and 3rd is a National insurance for everyone else.
They are all pretty similar in coverage, but if you’re an employee of a company, the company is required to pay half of your monthly insurance fee. Which is a great for most Japanese.
Another perk of being on the company health care system is that they commonly offer FREE Annual Health Check-ups. It’s funny though because health examines becomes a yearly talking point for many Japanese employees as many companies schedule it the same time every year. Employees ask each other if they’ve taken it yet. Or talk about having to drink barium for the test, which gives a white stool. Or some complain that they don’t have time to take it since they are so busy with work. Regardless, you know it’s coming since HR will spam employees to schedule their health exam.
The basic annual health examination is called Kenko Shindan. Again, it’s free for company employees. The exam check things like your eye sight, hearing, blood, Chest X-ray, urinalysis, etc.
There’s even more of comprehensive health examination and it’s called Ningen Dock. These additional tests including things like Respiratory, Stool Tests, Abdominal ultrasound, more detailed bloodwork, etc. What’s nice is that when your over 35 years old the company insurance covers this for FREE as well.

I’ve learned so much from observing the people and their culture during my travels and of course, taking the time to go off the beaten path and experience as much of it as possible.
I have traveled to Japan many times, in particular to Okinawa which is of course world famous for its number of centenarians and the longevity of the locals in general. But having spent time in Tokyo, I have come to know a different Japan; where old world and new collide and yet, the same traditions and culture remain completely unchanged.
So I had to ask myself, where can I go to get a better understanding of the Japanese diet? What makes it so different from what we know in the west? Why does it seem like everyone is healthy and thin? I believe there are many factors that contribute to these answers and I could write all day long about it, but to find my answer to the question of diet, I thought where better to get a glimpse than a walk around a modern Tokyo supermarket to see for myself. there are certainly some factors that were surprising, especially the amount of plastic used for one of the world's top recyclers, but my aim was to focus on differences and foods, and I think in that sense it tells us a lot.
Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to be notified as we will have a lot of upcoming content related to Japan. I believe we can learn so much by simply observing their customs and habits as related to diet, and I intend to dig deeper in my journey and post as many videos as possible.
To your health and happiness.

How to live longer? According to the World Health Organization, Japanese people have the highest life expectancy in the world: 83.7 years. They also have one of the lowest obesity rates. In Japan, only 3.8% of men and 3.4% of women are obese compared to the United States where it’s 37.9% of men and 41.5% of women. A huge part of why Japanese people live so long and why they beat most countries with regards to health is their diet. So keep watching to learn how to slim down like the Japanese.

SUMMARY:
- The Japanese diet is low in saturated fats and salt, processed foods, sweets, and drinks that contain a lot of sugar.
- On a regular day, a person should consume 5 to 7 grain dishes (like rice, bread, noodles, and pasta), 5 to 6 vegetable dishes of different varieties, 3 to 5 fish and meat dishes, 2 milk products (like milk and cheese), and 2 fruits.
- In Japan, people sit down at a dining table because eating is an experience that they believe should have their full attention. As such, it’s traditional for the Japanese to enjoy their meals.
- The Japanese diet places a focus on buying locally sourced foods. People are advised to pay attention to seasonal foods and incorporate those ingredients.
- Every meal in Japan should be well-balanced and contain products from several food groups. For example, a typical school lunch in Japan consists of rice, meat or fish, miso soup, a glass of milk, and a piece of fruit.
- The Japanese diet might sound restrictive to a foreigner — but not to a Japanese person. For them, variety is key! In terms of fish, they eat shrimp, trout, salmon, and tuna.
- n Japan, a conscious attitude toward nutrition is formed in elementary school. According to Masahiro Oji, a government director of school health education, “Japan’s standpoint is that school lunches are a part of education.”

So you want to live to be 100? The answers to living a long and happy life may come from Japan which has the longest average life expectancy in the world (83.84 years) and where 2 million people are over the age of 90. Believe it or not, 6 of the top 10 oldest people alive are from Japan including Nabi Tajima of Kagoshima who is 117 years old and the last human alive born in the 19th century!
How did so many Japanese get to live so long?
What are some of the things Japanese do right?
In this episode, John travels to Tottori Prefecture to the area around Mt Daisen where his friend Tomiko-san gives him some advice about how to live a long life and how she's lived to be 106 years old and still working on the farm!
Her secret?
Tofu.
She started to make tofu in the 1950s when doctors said residents had to reduce high blood pressure. She made her own tofu for her family and her diet combined with good habits including staying busy and working hard have strengthened her mind and body. She still walks and writes tanka poetry.
I also ask Mr. Seiichi, my 97 year old Japanese neighbor his secret and hear from a Shinto priest about his thoughts and personal experiences with living a very long and happy life in Japan.
It's impossible to say exactly what has led to Japan having the longest average life expectancy in the world but these things may help:
★ Green Tea
★ Less fatty foods
★ Seafood
★ Fermented foods
★ Bath culture / Hot Springs & Onsen
★ Smaller portions
★ Education on personal responsibility
★ National safety / low crime rates
★ Respect for the Elderly (It's a national holiday too!)
★ DNA
Special thank you to Daisen Town & Yonago City in Tottori Prefecture for the help. Daisen is celebrating its 1300th anniversary this year and you're invited to the party in June 2018! http://www.daisen1300.org/

Dr. Yasushi Sakuramoto is an EMPA candidate with an interest in sustainable health policy, crisis management and leadership. He most recently earned a Master in Public Health from the University of California Berkeley. Prior to his studies, Dr. Sakuramoto was Deputy Director, Medical Economics Division, Health Insurance Bureau in the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Tokyo. In the aftermath of his country’s 2011 earthquake, he was dispatched to Fukishima in order to coordinate a system to dispatch physicians to the most critical areas. Dr. Sakuramoto earned his medical degree from Jutendo University in Japan.

in today's video i'm talking about something i call the japanese diet, inspired by a book from 1889 called "a japanese boy" by shukichi shigemi ( that i read years ago ). when describing the japanese culture to americans, shigemi writes about how parents are encouraging their kids to eat a healthy diet. basically kids got told to eat 30 different things per day, and 100 things per week. sounds like a lot, right ? and that's where the idea of the japanese diet comes in. i was so intrigued by this old school variety concept that i decided to put myself to the test. check it out !

would you guys try this little experiment ? also, if you're from japan, tell me if you ever heard of this 30 per day, 100 per week diet ? is it something your parents ever taught you ? maybe it's a thing of the past - i mean the book was written in the 19th century after all...
i'm very curious about what parents tell their children to eat in every country, so hit me with your best diet tips in the comments !

5 Japanese Methods For Staying Healthy and Fit

Instead, you want the food to create warmth in your body as this ensures that the food gets burned off.
Plus, liquids tend to neutralize acid in the stomach which results in poor digestion.
2. Use Japanese Water Therapy.
This essentially states that water helps to boost your digestive system and clean out the stomach.
It is recommended that you drink water upon waking after sleep in a lukewarm state and do not consume any food within forty-five minutes of drinking the water.
Four to six glasses of 200 millilitres is the recommended dosage.
3. Balance Out Your Macro Nutrients.
The Japanese are much better at controlling their macronutrient intakes despite not tracking the same way as North Americans do.
Instead, they make sure they are getting enough carbohydrates, fat, and protein by eating satiating vegetables and fruits with fibrous grains like rice.
4. Start Your Meal With Soups and Swap in Rice. By filling up on soups, you are less likely to overeat on items that have a lot of calories, fats, and sugars in them.
By swapping in rice instead of bread, not only are you going to feel more full but rice promotes healthy digestion whereas bread can cause a lot of bloating and gas problems.
5. Practice Hara Hachi Bunme.
This is a little-known habit that states that you should only eat until you are about eighty percent full.
This way, you give your brain some time to catch up to your stomach.
The reason this helps you lose weight and keep weight off is that it takes your brain about twenty minutes to register that it is full.
By only eating until you are eighty percent full, you end up being less likely to overeat.
In addition to this, you should eat your food slowly to help with the process.
Other than the above, the Japanese promote active lifestyles that keep them fit as they move around regularly.
Although they don’t necessarily hit the gym all the time, they do make sure that they move about daily by walking and using public transportation to get around.
You may also want to drink tea instead of sugar-filled beverages, choose fermented foods, and snack smartly on small portions.
If you can incorporate the above into your daily routines, not only will you see some weight come off, but you will find that you sleep better and are overall happier and healthier.

Having lived in Indonesia my whole life, it's surely fascinating for me to see the 360-degree difference between Japanese and Indonesian food culture and lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, the Japanese only has 3.8% of men and 3.4% of women that are obese. This is partly because Japanese people are accustomed to healthy foods in their diet. So keep on watching to know how I think Japanese people could maintain their weight and stay slim.
