Rapid City Journal

The Rapid City Journal (formerly the Black Hills Journal and the Rapid City Daily Journal) is the daily newspaper of Rapid City, South Dakota. It is the second-largest newspaper in South Dakota and covers Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The newspaper also publishes the Sturgis Rally Daily and Black Hills 2 Go, which are two special supplements. The Sturgis Rally Daily is published during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and Black Hills 2 Go is the weekly tourism and entertainment tab.

History

The Rapid City Journal began on January 5, 1878, as the Black Hills Journal. Publisher Joseph P. Gossage produced the first edition of the Black Hills Journal, which was four pages and had 250 subscribers. Printed in a log cabin on Rapid Street, the first newspaper was laboriously cranked out on a Washington hand printing press.

The newspaper printed its first daily paper and changed its name to the Rapid City Daily Journal on February 2, 1886. It continued to publish as both a daily and a weekly newspaper until 1929.

City (journal)

City: analysis of urban trends, culture, theory, policy, action is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes research, analysis, and commentary relating to cities, their futures, and urbanization. The journal was established in 1996, but ran out of money in 1997. It was relaunched in 2000. The journal is published by Routledge and the editor-in-chief is Bob Catterall.

City Journal is a quarterly magazine published by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, a conservative think tank based in New York City. Its current editor is Brian C. Anderson. The magazine was started in 1994.Myron Magnet, its editor from 1994 to 2006, is now editor-at-large. Many City Journal articles focus on urban policy. Contributors include John M. Olin and Senior Fellow Heather Mac Donald.

Although the magazine is based in New York City, its scope is national, particularly including California. Additionally, there is often a British perspective from Anthony Daniels, better known by his pen name of Theodore Dalrymple. The magazine was also noticeable as one of the first to link to blogs on its website that referenced it, and to engage directly with the blogosphere.

Rapid City (Lakota: Mni Lúzahaŋ Otȟúŋwahe; "Swift Water City") is the second-largest city in South Dakota (after Sioux Falls) and the county seat of Pennington County. Named after Rapid Creek, on which the city is established, it is set against the eastern slope of the Black Hills mountain range. The population was 67,956 as of the 2010 Census. Known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents", it is split by a low mountain ridge that divides the western and eastern parts of the city. Ellsworth Air Force Base is located on the outskirts of the city. Camp Rapid, a part of the United States Army National Guard, is located in the western part of the city. The historic "Old West" town of Deadwood is nearby. In the neighboring Black Hills are the popular tourist attractions of Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave National Park.
