For decades, South Africa was under apartheid: a series of laws that divided people by race. Then, in the 1990s, those laws were dismantled. But many of the barriers they created continue to divide South Africans by skin color - which in turn determines their quality of life, access to jobs, and wealth. Racial division was built into the fabric of cities throughout South Africa, and it still hasn't been uprooted.
That's partly because, while apartheid was the culmination of South Africa's racial divisions, it wasn't the beginning of them. That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transformed the region's economy into one that excluded most Black people -- and then made that exclusion the law.

Apartheid: The rise and fall of South Africa's 'apartness' laws
South Africa is marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of apartheid in 2019.
Apartheid, the Afrikaans word for "apartness," was made up of a collection of strict laws targeting visible minorities in the country and is viewed as one of the darkest periods in the nation's history.
For nearly half a century, non-white South Africans were stripped of their freedoms and suffered under government imposed restrictions.
The face of the anti-apartheid movement became Nelson Mandela - who was jailed as a political prisoner for 27 years - whom would later become the nation's president and an icon of freedom and justice.
So, how could institutionalized discrimination take hold in South Africa, and what steps were taken to bring an end to apartheid?

South Africa's last white president issues posthumous apology for pain of apartheid
The former South African president FW de Klerk recorded a message to the nation shortly before his death on Thursday, in which he apologised for 'the pain and the hurt and the indignity and the damage' the apartheid regime had caused. De Klerk oversaw the end of white minority rule as the country's last apartheid president and shared the Nobel peace prize with Nelson Mandela, but was a controversial figure in the country. Many blamed him for violence against Black South Africans and anti-apartheid activists during his time in power

That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transforme...

South Africa: F.W. de Klerk and the end of Apartheid | DW Documentary
South Africa’s former president Frederik Willem de Klerk has died at the age of 85. As it’s last white minority leader he steered his country towards the end of apartheid - for which De Klerk and Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize.
On 1 February 1991, South Africa’s then president, Frederik Willem de Klerk, announced the repeal of the country’s last apartheid laws. By the end of the year, racial segregation was finally consigned to the past in South Africa - on paper at least. Together with Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for this battle, de Klerk forever changed South Africa and wrote global history. Although de Klerk was originally a supporter of racial segregation, in the end he was the one charged with the job of ending apartheid. In the year 1993, de Klerk and Mand...

De Klerk: South Africa's last white president apologises for apartheid in video released after death
South Africa's last segregationist president apologised for the "pain and hurt" of apartheid in a video message released after his death amid a row over his legacy.
The death of FW de Klerk, who helped dismantle apartheid and transfer power to a black-led government, triggered national mourning but also celebration among his most ardent opponents.
In a video released by his foundation, he said, voice shaking: "Let me today, in this last message to the people, say I, without qualification, apologise for the pain and the hurt and the indignity and the damage that apartheid has done to black, brown and Indians in South Africa."

In the year 1993, de Klerk and Mandela, who would succeed him as president one year later, received the Nobel Prize for Peace. De Klerk was vilified by some, praised by many, but despite his great deeds he always remained in the background. The documentary film: The Other Man - F.W. de Klerk and the End of Apartheid, opens a completely new perspective on the life and work of South Africa’s last white president.
