Trapped In Idlib: Syria's Last Holdout against Assad and Russia | Foreign Correspondent
Before Ukraine, there was Syria.
Now in its 11th year, this ongoing conflict is Russia’s forgotten war. Since Putin got involved in 2015, Russian military support has helped the dictator Bashar al-Assad turn the tide and take back control of most of the country.
The intense aerial bombardment being felt now in Ukraine is all too familiar to the Syrian people.
In 2016, Syrian journalist Yaman Khatib lived through the brutal Russian bombing campaign which left the city of Aleppo in ruins and delivered it into Assad’s hands.
Khatib fled to neighbouring Turkey, however as seen in this documentary produced by ARTE, Khatib returns back to Syria to see how the people who stayed are faring.

A thousand miles from Ukraine, Syrians in Idlib fear history is repeating itself
Ukrainians have been living, suffering and dying under withering Russian air, artillery and missile strikes. Their plight and resistance are perhaps nowhere better understood than in Syria's Idlib province. There, Syrians who oppose president Bashar al-Assad are in their 11th year of resistance against him and his closest ally Vladimir Putin. Abdul Razzak el-Shami and Ali Rogin report.

Why the city of Idlib could spell the end of the Syrian war.

Idlib is the last rebel-held stronghold of the Syrian war.
The 90,000 rebels (20,000 of them extremist jihadis - Assad's regime refuses to differentiate) were expecting an offensive by the Syrian Arab Army and its Russian and Iranian allies to start, but it has been postponed after Russia and Turkey agreed to establish a demilitarised zone around the province.
Postponed being the operative word.
Here Newsnight's Mike Thomson explains why the battle for Idlib is so significant.

Inside Idlib: The Plight of Civilians in Syria’s Last Rebel Stronghold
Since late April, the Syrian regime and its Russian allies have launched near-daily airstrikes and shelling throughout the province of Idlib, the last rebel stronghold left after 8 years of bitter civil war. While Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claims he is targeting rebel terrorist groups, it’s clear that civilians like Mohammad are bearing the brunt of a relentless and indiscriminate bombing campaign.
More than 700 civilians, including 300 children, have been killed since the latest offensive began. More than 400,000 more have been displaced in the same time frame, according to the United Nations, and the Syrian Civil Defense teams work round the clock to help struggling families move away from neighborhoods that are still being shelled. The fighting continues even as Russian, Turkis...

Syria’s Idlib province fears renewed military offensive | DW News
Five years ago, the Russian military intervened in the war in Syria with air strikes, turning around the war that Assad's troops had almost lost. Since then, the Assad regime, supported by its allies Russia and Iran, have regained control of most of Syria. Kurdish forces still hold the north-east but have signed a deal with Assad. Only Idlib province in the north-west, to which hundreds of thousands of people fled, is still controlled by rebels – with the support of Turkey. A ceasefire took effect in Idlib in March, but it is a fragile one, and an increasing number of Russian air strikes have made the population fear that a decisive battle might soon begin.

Khatib visits the embattled province of Idlib in the northwest, the last opposition holdout against Assad and his Russian allies.
More than three million people live there, two thirds of them displaced from other parts of the country.
He meets families who’ve just arrived, families who’ve lost everything and the brave people who help them.
Khatib meets Ahlam, a mother and herself a refugee. She and her family have lived in Idlib for a decade.
Every day Ahlam heads out onto the streets seeking out people who’ve just arrived, offering them help. She blogs on social media, hoping to draw attention to their plight.
“We never imagined that one day, in our country, in our own homes, that someone would come to us and say, ‘Leave! Get out! Go live in a tent!"’says Ahlam. “That's why I can truly relate to the pain of others. I've experienced it myself.”
Khatib says that the world’s indifference to Syrians’ plight continues to surprise them.
More than half a million dead. More than six and half million refugees outside the country, and six and half million citizens internally displaced.
No meaningful international help.
Khatib meets Abu Medien, a farmer and father of 8, all the family's belongings all crammed into a truck.
The family has been on the road for three years and have moved 15 times. He wants to go home. “That would be the best thing for us. We don’t want anything, not even a house.”
But with international borders now closed, the people here are stuck, Khatib says, ‘like ghosts’.
Despite the ceasefire in Idlib agreed to by Russia and Turkey in 2020, bombings have continued.
Both Russia and Syria are guilty of war crimes, says the UN, but neither have been held accountable.
