Italy landslide: Ischia residents hampered by mud as search for missing continues
Rescuers were trying to find four people still missing after a deadly landslide hit the town of Casamicciola Terme on Italy's holiday island of Ischia, with houses brought down and mud submerging the streets.
The death toll from the landslide caused by torrential rain over the weekend rose to eight including a baby.
“Everything in the valley is still buried. I've seen ten earthquakes and floods, and no one has ever done anything,” local resident Pasquale Barbieri said.
Residents were hampered by thick mud, debris and stones in the area. Several cars were submerged on the shoreline, apparently pushed into the sea by the landslide and floods.
''It is the fault of our old politicians, who did not do preventive work on the mountains,” Ischia resident Ciro Buono said.

A rescue operation is underway on the Italian island of Ischia after multiple buildings were engulfed in a landslide caused by heavy rain.
The island, in the Bay of Naples, has also been beset by flooding, with at least 12 people said to be missing. Two people were rescued from a car after it was dragged into the sea, the fire service said.
Italy’s infrastructure minister Matteo Salvini said that eight people had been killed in the landslide during a speech in Milan on Saturday. However, interior minister Matteo Piantedosi later contradicted this by saying that there had been no confirmed deaths.
